Cannabis and CBD acceptance is gaining significant ground within the public sphere, even if this is merely at a gradual pace. What is particularly more exciting is when this is discussed on a grand stage, such as the United Nations General Assembly.

Such opportunities are few and far between. But when a celebrated personality like the newly elected Columbian President Gustavo Petro begins to speak about the drug war in front of an audience of world leaders, the whole world literally listens.

In the debate, President Petro took the floor and discussed a more immediate concern of his — the global war on drugs — which he has observed to be quite ineffective. As the more powerful countries are aggressively pursuing drug traffickers — as provided for in the existing 40-year-old drug policy — this has only compelled drug cartels to toughen up even more, resulting in the senseless deaths of many people. The Columbian leader effectively called for a revision of the policy, for fear of the risk of further genocide.

Petro also offered a novel suggestion on legalizing marijuana in Colombia as a means of reducing the influence of the illegitimate market. He added that the policy change should allow the release of people who are currently in prison over marijuana use — a significant notion that takes on a much warmer stance towards cannabis.

He was also quick to highlight the economic potential of a legal cannabis industry in Colombia, specifically the possibility of exporting ingredients to countries where cannabis use is legal.
